Jesus and Peter Walk on the Water

The Bible story of Peter walking on water with Jesus is told in Matthew 14:22-33.

Jesus walks on water shortly before dawn.  Jesus walks on the lake to his disciples who are being battered by waves at sea. The disciples are terrified and think he is a ghost, but Jesus calms their fears, saying, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid".

Why do you think Jesus walked on water when He could have appeared in the boat?

Peter walks on the water.  At Jesus' command, Peter gets out of the boat and walks on the water toward Jesus.

How do you feel when Jesus asks you to “get out of your boat and walk on water”?

Peter sinks Peter begins to sink in fear when he sees the wind and waves. He cries out, "Lord, save me!" and Jesus reaches out his hand to catch him.

When you are overwhelmed with problems and circumstances, give examples of how you cried out to the Lord, and he saved you.

Jesus reproves Peter Jesus reproves Peter's faith, saying, "O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?”.

Have you ever doubted Jesus because your faith was not strong? How has God strengthened your faith through trials?

The wind dies down. After Peter and Jesus return to the boat, the wind stops and those in the boat worship Jesus.

Have you worshiped Jesus during your storm, or do you only worship after the storm?

I Will Make you Fishers of Men

Luke 5:8-11 NIV, When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” 9 For him and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything, and followed him.

1. Have you ever been fishing? Do you like it? Why or why not?

2. Peter thought he was too sinful to be used by Jesus. Jesus sees beyond our sins and only sees who He created. How are you allowing Jesus to use it for the work of the ministry?

3. Is there an area in your life where you feel like Jesus is calling you into the “deep water,” something he wants you to do, or a place he wants to take you that goes against conventional wisdom? Is there anything holding you back from following Him?

4. How can we “fish for men” in 2024?
