Sermon Noted from Pastor, Dr. Shana Wise
Examining the names of God from the book of Genesis.
We have been studying the book of Genesis since the beginning of the year (January) we will be continuing and finishing up the study at the end of April. This has been such a rich study because we have learned about God's original intent for mankind (Gen1:26-28), the fall of mankind (Garden of Eden), the stories before and after the flood, and the stories of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Throughout this book, God is revealing some of his names to us. The names of God are attributes of His character.
God refers to himself as the I AM.
Exodus 3:14 (NIV) God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”
Genesis 32: 26-29 Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” 27 The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered.28 Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.” 29 Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.” But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there.
When Jacob wrestled with God and he asked him his name, God never told him his name, he just blessed him for asking. The lesson that we can learn from this is that God wants us to seek him, he wants us to inquire about who He is to us. In doing so, he will reveal himself to us and bless us.
Matthew 7:6-8, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
God created all of us with one purpose in mind-relationship. Like a loving father, God wants a relationship with all his children. A good earthly father is a protector, leader, provider, teacher, and so on. Our heavenly father is all these things and more, because he is Holy and He is our God.
God wants us to know who we are, where we come from, and the purpose that he has for us. In doing so, he gives us the names of his character throughout the bible. Let us examine the names that he revealed in the book of Genesis.
Elohim
God as a sculptor of mankind
Genesis 1.26–27, Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
El Elyon
Most High God
Genesis 14.18–22, Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, 19 and he blessed Abram, saying, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. 20 And praise be to God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand. Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything. 21 The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people and keep the goods for yourself.” 22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “With raised hand I have sworn an oath to the Lord, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth,
Adonai
“Lord”
Genesis 15:2, But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?”
EL ROI
God of Seeing-the name of God by Hagar.
Genesis 16:13-14, She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.” 14 That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi; it is still there, between Kadesh and Bered.
El Olam
The Everlasting or Eternal God
Genesis 21:32-33 After the treaty had been made at Beersheba, Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces returned to the land of the Philistines. 33 Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called on the name of the Lord, the Eternal God.
Yahweh-Jireh
"The Lord Will Provide"– the name memorialized by Abraham when God provided the ram to be sacrificed in place of Isaac.
Genesis 22:14, So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.”
El Elohe Israel
Genesis 33.16-20, So that day Esau started on his way back to Seir. 17 Jacob, however, went to Sukkoth, where he built a place for himself and made shelters for his livestock. That is why the place is called Sukkoth. 18 After Jacob came from Paddan Aram, he arrived safely at the city of Shechem in Canaan and camped within sight of the city. 19 For a hundred pieces of silver, he bought from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, the plot of ground where he pitched his tent. 20 There he set up an altar and called it El Elohe Israel.
El Shaddai
The God of the mountain, guardian of Joseph. “God Almighty,” “The Mighty One of Jacob”
Gen 49.25, because of your father’s God, who helps you, because of the Almighty, who blesses you with blessings of the skies above, blessings of the deep springs below, blessings of the breast and womb.
